The Rabbit King of China - Ren Xuping's legend
Known as "the Rabbit King of China" in the International animal field, Mr. Ren Xuping, 40, animal specialist, is a famous rabbit expert, educationist, and entrepreneur in China. Mr. Ren Xuping takes the positions of CEO of the Sichuan Xuping Rabbit Co. Ltd, volunteer of Heifer International China Program, Deputy Chairman of the Rabbit Council, Sichuan Provincial Academy of Animal and Veterinary Science, Chairman of Dayi Rabbit Association, president of Sichuan Xuping Rabbit Training School, Director of SichuanXuping Breeding Rabbit Farm, and Gereral Manager of Sichuan Xuping Greenfood Meat Processing Comany.
At the age of 13 in 1980, Mr. Ren Xuping started his rabbit raising business with two rabbits. Two years later he became known to his neighbors. So far he has been raising rabbits for 21 years, with a total sset of 6,000,000 yuan. He owns a "Xuping Rabbit Training School," which has good teaching equipment and advanced education methodology. More than 300,000 persons have been trained in this school, coming from various places such as all provinces, cities and profectures across China, the DPRK, Nepal, Thailand, India and UK. Most of the trainees have become better off through raising rabbits, some even turning into millionaires. Mr. Ren Xuping also owns a "Xuping Fine Quality Rabbit Farm," which is the best rabbit farm in S.W. China. There are 2,860 fine quality breedable rabbits in stock every year. Mr. Ren has built up a strong marketing network based on his more than 300,000 students, and a large number of his business partners across China and from some foreign countries. He has sold 600,000 fine quality breeding rabbits, 5,000,000 commercial rabbits, and 100,000 meat goats and piegons. He also provided 2,000 breeding rabbits to the DPRK and Nepal. The sophisticated, high quality "Sichuan Xuping Greenfood Rabbit Meat Processing Plant" and "Sichuan Xuping Research Institute of Herbivorous Animals" are being constructed.
Because of outstanding achievements in leading farmers to better life through raising rabbits, Mr. Ren Xuping was recognized by great leaders of China, such as Deng Xiaoping, Wan Li, Wang Zhen, Bo Yibo, Tan Qilong, Wang Zhaoguo, Song Defu, Yang Rudai, and Zhang Hao, as well as provincial and city leaders like Zhang Zhongwei, Yang Chonghui, Tao Wuxian. He also won more than 30 honors, like "Model Youth in Learning and Utilizing Science in the Rural Area," "China Agricultural Education Prize," "Outstanding Youth in Sichuan," "Advanced Individual in Running School in Chengdu, and " Golden Talent Award of Heifer International China Program." In September 1987, representing the Youth with outstanding contributions to Sichuan Province, Ren Xuping joined the China Youth Representative Delegation to visit the DPRK.
In October 1999, a journalist from the UK, Mr. Peter Housler conducted a one-moneth study on Ren Xuping's rabbit raising business in Dayi County, Sichuan Province. He was deeply impressed, and wrote an article "China's Rabbit King Pulls a Triumph Out of a Hare-Raising Experience," which was then published on the Wall Street Journal as the Headline Story. Since then, many Journals, TV Station, Radio Station, and websitesfrom both home and abroad have reported "China's Rabbit King Mr. Ren Xuping.
Ren Xuping has really succeeded!! Not only did he become rich and known to the World as the Rabbit King of China, but he never stops teaching the rural youths, the poor families, students, retired workers, and laid-off workers how to raise rabbits in a scientific way, lifting 300,000 trainees out of poverty. Let's open up the Rabbit King's 21 years' magnificent life paint to appreciate his proud mystery therein.
BECOMING THE RABBIT KING AT THE AGE OF 16, WALKING OUT HIS OWN WAY
Ren Xuping was born of a poor farmer family in Yuanyang Village, Jinyuan Township, Dayi County, Sichuan Province in 1967. As a child, he was fond of small animals, like rabbits. In Summer 1980, he was 13, graduating from middle school. Because his family was very poor, he lost the opportunity of going to high school. "What should I do? What way shall I walk on?" These questions are often thought over and over in Xuping's mind. He was in quite a dillema when his Daddy bought two rabbit does home and asked him to feed them. Seeing the two active little white things, Xuping was very interested. He fed them very well. One month later, one of them gave birth to eight babies. Another month passed by, he sold the eight bunnies, earning his first twelve yuan (US $1.45).
Xuping was happy to the deepest of the heart, for that was the first money he had ever made, through his own hard work. That successful try encouraged him to continue working hard. At that time, the government was encouraging farmers to learn and use science and technolgy to become better off. Xuping started to raise more rabbits.
      His rabbit business grew from 2 rabbits, to 17, 34, 85, 120, 230...
his income also dramatically increased, up from 12 yuan, to 90, 200, 1,500, 2,600, 5,300...
In February 2, 1983, Mr. Yang Rudai, (then General Secretary of Sichuan Provincial Party Committee, and now deputy Chairperson of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference), visited Little Xuping on his way to inspect specialized farmer families in Dayi County. When he learned that Xuping made 2,600 yuan by raising rabbits in 1982, Mr. Yang patted Xuping on the head, "Very good. You will have bright future. Every business makes a king. You will become very successful by raising rabbits." These words have inspired Xuping a great deal. Every year since then, Yang Rudai would visit Xuping's rabbit farm. It was just since then when Ren Xuping began to regard rabbit raising as a big thing in his life. He worked hard in learning scientific rabbit raising technicques, introducing more fine quality breeding rabbits and enlarging his own rabbit farm. By 1985, his rabbit farm had held 1,600 cages. His net income reached 100,000 yuan. He became a rabbit king in Dayi County.
In May 1983, Sichuan Youth League recognized Ren Xuping as "the Excellent Youth League Member." On 17 February 1984, Ren Xuping came to Huai Ren Tang, Zhong Nanhai, Beijing to participate in the Award Ceremony of Model Youth in learning and using Science. Among all the model youth across China, Ren Xuping was the youngest. Deputy Prime Minister Wan Li distributed the award to him and held his hands to encourage him. Wang Zhaoguo, Secretary of the Central League Committee, interviewed Ren Xuing twice. In 1985, when great leader Deng Xiaoping and Wang Zhen came to Sichuan, Deng Xiaoping said to Xuping, "It is not our goal that one gets rich. Our goal is to make all become rich." These words often inspire Xuping. He made up his mind to become a rabbit expert, contributing to the poverty alleviation. (TOP)
BEARING FIRMLY IN MIND THE "INSTRUCTIONS" OF THE GREAT LEADERS -- TO PROMOTE RABBIT EDUCATION, HELPING ALL BECOME BETTER OFF
At the beginning, Ren Xuping did not know much about rabbit raising. But he was very diligent in raising rabbits and learning rabbit knowledge. He attended training classes or consulted technical people in the Dayi County Committee of Science & Technology, the Dayi Bureau of Animal Husbandry, Wenjiang Agricultural School, Sichuan Agricultural University, Sichuan Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and and Veterinary Medicine. He taught himself the college textbooks of Animal and veterinary science. He used what he learned to his rabbit farm. Through his hard study, he finally summarized a best, practical approach in raising rabbit. This approach includes the following critical points:
     1) Reasonable breed structure, strict breed selection to preserve pedigree breeds, and constantly improving rabbit productivity
     2) In rabbit production, try to make the male rabbits in big body size, female rabbits medium size, and commercial rabbits crossbred.
    3) Use a prevention procedure to ensure rabbits' health.
     4) Rabbit formularized, granule feed (major ingredient is hay meal).

Under this approach, rabbits grow fast and have strong disease resistance. They could be put into market over a shorter period of time. Their carcass looks god, with small bones and abundant meat. The pellet feed formula saves a lot of time, labor in collecting grasses, and reduces morbidity as practiced in the traditional approach.
In 1985, Heifer International China Program gave 48 fine quality rabbits to Ren Xuping, who quickly developed them taking advantage of his strong rabbit knowledge and skills. As early as in 1983, Ren Xuping started to wonder how he could make other farmers around him become rich through raising rabbits. Then he started a rabbit training school. The number of students attending his school had increased with each passing day. Many of them have really become rich afterwards. In 1985, Ren Xuping officially founded "Sichuan Xuping Rabbit Training School," which was the first school sponsored by an individual in Sichuan Province. The school teaches students both theoretical knowledge in raising rabbits and pratical skills, and it provides unlimited technical service to trainees. Over the last two decades, this school has trained more than 300,000 people from many provinces, cities and prefectures, including farmers, workers, state cardres, retired people, pupils and army men. The youngest trainee was only 12 years old, and the oldest one was 75. The Xuping Rabbit Training School also trained more than 3,000 foreign students from the DPRK, Nepal, and India. Of the 300,000 trainees, over 80% has become rich, 20% becomes large raisers, with some trainees becoming even millionaires. Almost all big rabbit raisers in Sichuan province graduated from Xuping Rabbit Training School, for instance, Chen Tiande in Jianyang City, Gou Shigui in Ren Shou, Sun Yaoping in Nanchong, Hu Xuewu in Linshui County, Wen Dehe in Yi Bin City, Ren Xingquan in Cangxi County, and Zhu Wenxiu in Shuangliu County. Rabbit raising in Sichuan has boomed up with support of the Xuping Rabbit Training School and its trainees. It has become China's second largest province in raising rabbits.
"To become rich to raise rabbits; ask Xuping to become better off" - this word is popular among all trainees of the Xuping Rabbit Training School. In order to appreciate the Party's good policy, Ren Xuping started free technical training. He came to the garrison, The 13th and 24th Middle School of Chengdu, Dayi, Chouzhou, Jintang, Xindu, Heishui Vocational School, Jiangjin Bureau of Animal Husbandry, and Xuanhan to offer 1,000 free rabbit training sessions, training 30,000 people. In recent years, he gave training to laid-off workers, enabling many of them to find a way for their livings. The Xuping Rabbit Training School almost does not charge those trainess, who came from China's revolutionary area, remote mountainous areas, minority group inhabitant area, and poor area, as well as who are from the army, handicapped, or converted prisoners.
The Xuping Rabbit Training School has the strength in rabbit scientific technologies. In order to make more poor farmers and laid-off workers to become better off, Ren Xuping wrote some practical technical books, covering all his experiences in raising rabibts. In the last 21 years, he has published 600 technical papers in "Animal and Veterinary Science," "China Rabbit Magazine," "Sichuan Newspaper of Science and Technology," "Sichuan Newspaper of Rural Area," "Livestock and Poultry, China Information Newspaper for the Countryside," and "Sichuan Livestock and Poultry." His books include "How to raise rabbits," and "Indigenous Way of Rabbit Raising." In 1984, he published "One hundred Questions in Raising Rabbits," which was printed for 490,000 copies, and were still out of the market demand. In 1995, he modified this book and had it published again. In 1999, he wrote "Rabbit Disease Prevention and Control," and "New Technologies in Raising Meat Rabbits." To follow the call for technoliges to promote Sichuan economy, Ren Xuping contributed his book "How to Raise Rabbits" to publish on the newspaper for 45 issues. By October 2001, he has given 40,000 rabbit technical materials to farmers. (TOP)
PROMOTING LIVESTOCK INDUSTRIALIZATION, AND TURNING TO THE NEW FIELD OF GREENFOOD MEAT PROCESSING
Time flies! The world has now entered the second year of the 21st Centuary. China economy has staged into the fast-growing new era. "China Rabbit King" Ren Xuping's enterprise has also developed into the largest and strongest dragon-head enterprise in animal husbandry business. The new centuray and economy have also many fast growing opportunities for the rabbit king. At present, China is promoting the "western development" strategy. And now China has joined the WTO. Sichuan Provincial Party Committee and Government pointed out that we must build Sichuan into a Province strong in animal raising. They encourage dragon-head enterprises to promote farmer groups to increase production so that Sichuan Province could become an animal exporting base. In recent years, with the wide spreading of mad cow disease, foot and mouth disease and fowl flu in Europe, people have become more and more concerned about security, health, hygiene, ecology and environmental protection. They have an increasing share of greenfood concern. Generally they will want pollution free, residue free greenfood. It is anticipated by experts that greenfood will become the backbone products in the 21st century. Ren Xuping, as the leading person in China animal raising field, has established Sichuan Xuping Greenfood Meat Processing Co. Ltd. It will use the production mode of "company+Production Base+farmer families." The planned investment is 28,000,000 yuan (US $3,389,831) in the processing of rabbit, goat and pigeon meat. Every year this project will create a total income of 23,000,000 yuan (US $2,784,504), with a net income and tax of 7,000,000 yuan (US $847,458). It will promote 30,000 farmer families to raise rabbits, meat goats and pigeons. Every family will make a per capita income of over 2,000 annually. The production base will include 40,000 mu of grassland. The goats will consume a large amount of agricultural crop stalks, cleaning the air and preventing from soil erosion.
Walking toward the morning sunligh of the new century, the young "Rabbit King of China," Ren Xuping will start the second big amibtion in his life. We are confident that he will make another magnificent achievemnt, and will surely contribute more to the inter-networking of China's animal husbandry with the world, and marketing livestock and poultry products to international markets.
